Why Grow Your Own Vegetables?
Answer: Obesity is overtaking smoking as the top cancer risk in United States. Smoking has long been rated the number one cause of cancer in the United States. But according to recent reports from the American Cancer Society, obesity is now just as much of a cancer risk factor as smoking.

The American Cancer Society estimates that almost one third of the 500,000 cancer deaths a year are related to physical activity and diet and one third are tobacco related. If current trends continue (smoking rates declining and obesity rates increasing), obesity will soon overtake tobacco use as the number one preventable cause of cancer.
Recent reports show that more than sixty percent of Americans are overweight or obese. The public health implications of the obesity epidemic and its relation to cancer are wide reaching. More troubling is the obesity-cancer link and its potentially tragic implications for today’s young people. About one third of American kids are overweight or obese; three times the rate in 1963. Today’s kids are bombarded with ads for fast food and other junk food, resulting in an entire overweight generation. Unless the trend is reversed we could be facing a public health time bomb in the not too distant future.
Some scientists believe obesity has already surpassed smoking as the number one avoidable cause of cancer. The American Institute of Cancer Research estimates that 100,000 cases of cancer per year could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight.
Excess body fat has been linked directly to at least seven cancers:
-
- colorectal
- post-menopausal breast
- esophageal
- endometrial
- kidney
- pancreatic
- gall bladder
According to the American Cancer Society, the majority of cancer cases is not due to genetic inheritance or genetic cell mutation, but is lifestyle related. Their conclusion is clear: a healthy lifestyle is your best way to avoid cancer and chronic disease. And the first part of that healthy lifestyle is to eat a healthydiet; limiting your consumption of red and processed meats (which have been linked directly to cancer) and choosing two-thirds of your foods from plant-based sources such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Yet one more reason to grow and eat your own organic vegetables.
