Just Right For The Holidays: White Hot Chocolate

JulieMorris1_large.jpgWell, it’s happened: I’ve caught the holiday spirit. Not only did I pull out my best festive sweater the other day, but I’ve been busted listening and singing along to the “Mr. Grinch” theme song. These things happen.

I’ve also been making some more “seasonal” style treats, especially the kind of cozy concoctions that are nice to cuddle up with as a hopeful consolation prize the lack of daylight. Cozy concoctions like, say, a candy cane white hot chocolate. I’ll admit: this is a much more decadent drink than I would consume on a regular basis, and something that resides fully in the dessert category. But it’s a perfect treat for the season!

A couple notes: the flavor will be effected by the type of hemp milk you use. I like the Tempt brand because it’s the smoothest and creamiest I’ve come across, but you’re welcome to adapt this recipe to include something like coconut milk or rice milk… you may just have to play around with the flavors a little. Cacao butter is the beautifully fragrant pure cacao fat from the cacao (chocolate) bean. You can find cacao butter here Navitas Naturals; the block lasts a long time and can also be used to make delicious raw chocolate, amazing desserts, or can even be used on the skin as the most luxurious moisturizer you’ve ever laid hands on. Yum!

Candy Cane White Hot Chocolate

INGREDIENTS:
¼ cup water
1 cup unflavored hemp milk
1½ Tbsp shaved cacao butter
1½ tsp agave nectar, or to taste (stevia also makes a good substitute)
3-4 drops mint extract
¼ tsp vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:
In a small saucepan, heat all the ingredients over low for about 5 minutes (cacao butter should be entirely melted at the surface). Transport to a blender and blend for 30 seconds to emulsify cacao butter into the beverage. Or, keep liquid in pan and use a hand-held blender to whisk directly in the saucepan.

Serves one.
